Find Your Swolemate | A Workout Partner Can Help
It’s time to get swole bro! Summer’s just around the corner and it’s time to kick your workout into the stratosphere. There’s no better way to do that than to find a workout buddy to mix things up and add some motivation to your workout. It’s time to find your swolemate!
What Does Swolemate Mean?
Swolemate is a slang term used to describer a workout buddy or weight lifting partner. It’s a play on the word swole or a shortened version of swollen. The word swole became a hashtag used by weightlifting fanatics and bodybuilders to describe the pump they see after a hard workout.
When you work a muscle group, you’re forcing blood and nutrients into the muscles under exertion. While the #swole may look great in the mirror as you head home from the gym or crossfit box, unfortunately it’s only temporary. As soon as your body recovers and your heart-rate and metabolism return to normal, your muscle will go back to it’s pre-workout stage.
Find Your Swolemate
Does having a workout partner help? The short answer is yes! A study produced by Psychology of Sport and Exercise in 2011 found that the exercise habits of people you know have a positive influence on your exercise habits.
The Department of Kinesiology at Indiana University surveyed married partners who were members of the same gym, fitness club or crossfit box and discovered that those that worked out separately had a 43% dropout rate over the course of a year. Those who worked out together however had only a 7% dropout rate regardless if they did the same workout or not. If that’s not motivation to find your swolemate then I don’t know what is!
Your new swolemate doesn’t have to be your best friend, they just have to have a similar commitment to working out and fitness. Psychologically speaking if you feel like you have commitment to someone else, you’re more likely to commit!
